Midday Mafia: Halepeska's Bakery offers treats, eats

June 26, 2013 at 1:26 a.m.

Editor's note: The Midday Mafia is made up of five locals who wish to remain anonymous at the moment. Names have been changed to protect the guilty and are as follows: The Don, Two Taps, Walnuts, Jack the Knife and Jimmy Three Cheese. The Midday Mafia will run every other Thursday in Get Out.

It's swimsuit season, and the boys don't like to look too shabby around the hotel pools we sneak into, so we went light last week and took over Halepaska's Bakery at the corner of John Stockbauer and Loop 463.

Long known for its amazing custom cakes and every conceivable type of cookie and pastry, Halepaska's offers an awesome lunch menu of truly wonderful eats. There is kind of a cluster of activity as you try to order, and I would have to dictate some decrease in the chaos if I worked there.

There are too many blue hairs stirring about for a group of large men; we kept feeling like we were gonna crush somebody. The food is worth the inconvenience and comes to your table very quickly.

Looking around the table revealed a variety of edible delights. There was a club sandwich, a BLT, a ham and cheese (Jack stepped way out of his burger zone) and chicken salad that is amazing. They also had a chicken tortilla soup that the boys raved about. All in all, we were quite civilized, which is rare.

After lunch, we perused the bakery cases and found several great desserts that make this stop a favorite. The buffalo chip cookies are a favorite, and everything is fresh, every day.

This place does a huge business as a bakery. I love the cream cheese roll and can say from experience it is about a 3-pound breakfast. It weighs very little, but it adds about 3 pounds to you.

The dining room offers access to unlimited refills of soft drinks and tea. The place is light and friendly, and the folks are sweet as the cookies and treats.

Give yourself a day off the Atkins diet and have a special lunch at Halepaska's Bakery. Until next time, fuhget about it.
