Seminar raises awareness of abuse of elderly

June 29, 2013 at 1:29 a.m.

How do you know when your elderly relative, neighbor or friend is being abused? What are the signs that they are either neglecting themselves or being neglected by someone who is supposed to be caring for them? And how do you keep them from being financially exploited?

These questions and so many more will be answered at a special community event July 17 hosted by The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, the Golden Crescent Area Agency on Aging and the Texas Area Health Education Center East-Victoria Region.

The seminar, "Elder Abuse and Neglect is Everyone's Business," has a lofty goal. It is designed to raise awareness of both elder abuse and prevention, while providing insight into the role of the Department of Family and Protective Services, mandated to investigate and mitigate further mistreatment. The seminar will also explore the role of law enforcement, the causes of abuse and neglect in addition to reporting, responding and preventing it. It also takes a look at advocacy for nursing facility residents and building healthier communities.

Seating is limited. To make a reservation or for more information, contact The Golden Crescent Area Agency on Aging at 361-578-1587, ext. 217 or christinag@gcrpc.org.
