The power of the VISD continues to be reflected in the power of our people. Our focus on "Every Child, Every Classroom, Every Day" allows the Victoria Independent School District to support every teacher as a leader and every student as a success. As I travel across our "612 Square Miles of Excellence," I am continuously amazed by all the outstanding accomplishments our students and staff are experiencing.
On Thursday, Victoria College hosted the 2013 Victoria County Spelling Bee. We are extremely proud to announce that the VISD had 20 students participating in this contest and that the first, second and third place finishers were all VISD students. We would like to extend our congratulations to Therese Eamiguel (sixth grade, Howell Middle School) on her first-place finish, Ryan Eshan (seventh grade, Stroman Middle School) on his second-place finish and Elisha Hosey-Stewart (seventh grade, Cade Middle School) for her third-place finish. Therese and Ryan will be moving on to the Regional Spelling Bee on March 19, and we wish them all the best!
Congratulations to the Victoria East Ballet Folklorico students and instructor, Ms. Elsa Pina, for recently being awarded first- and second-place finishes in the Team Ensemble Competition and for receiving Division I ratings in eight of their competition entries. This is an amazingly talented group, and we are honored to be represented by such outstanding young men and women.
The Victoria East High School Titan Speech and Debate Squad competed at the National Forensic League National Qualifying Tournament in Harlingen. Once again, VEHS will have a representative at the national meet. Congratulations to Summer Gregurek in qualifying for Nationals in Foreign Extemporaneous Speaking. This marks the fifth consecutive year that the VISD will have a National Qualifier.
Congratulations also to the Smith Elementary Choir, who wowed the attendees at the Texas Music Educators Association conference in San Antonio. It was a first for the school and a first for our VISD Elementary Music Program. Congratulations to Director Juan Saldana and to the students and their parents on a job well done. Further congratulations are also in order to Victoria East High School student Alan Olmos on recently earning a place on the prestigious and highly elite 4-A All State Band. This is the highest honor that can be awarded to a high school band student in Texas. Congratulations to Alan and band director David Edge for this tremendous honor.
Marion Wright Edelman once stated: "Service is the very purpose of life. It is the rent we pay for being on this planet." On behalf of our Board of Trustees and the entire VISD, we are extremely appreciative for the opportunity to serve such extraordinary students and exemplary personnel. We thank you for making Victoria ISD a place where dreams come true and a place where you do not have to be great to get started, but you have to get started to be great.
