An Edna man died Sunday morning after his vehicle was struck by an oncoming truck near Prasek's Hillje Smokehouse in El Campo.
Benjamin Frank Hyek, 82, of Edna, was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:50 a.m. by Wharton County Precinct 3 Justice of the Peace Dennis Korenek, according to the Department of Public Safety accident report.
Hyek's wife, Dorothy Hyek, 76, also of Edna, was driving their 2007 Buick north on U.S. 59 and attempted to cross over the lane to County Road 357.
As she crossed the lane, the Buick was struck on the passenger side by Arturo Burgos, 39, of Newberry, S.C., who was driving south on the same highway, according to the report.
Dorothy Hyek was flown by helicopter to Memorial Hermann hospital in Houston, where she remains in critical condition, a hospital spokesman said.
Burgos was transported by ambulance to El Campo Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, according to the DPS report.
Funeral services for Benjamin Hyek are pending with Slavik Funeral Home.
