The new judge for Victoria County Court-at-Law No. 1 is expected to start work Thursday.
Travis Ernst, who was appointed last week, took the oath of office and gave his $1,000 bond Monday during Commissioners Court.
County Judge Don Pozzi administered the oath.
"Judge Ernst is ready to go to work," Pozzi said.
Ernst said his first docket is Thursday.
"I'm trying to take care of my private practice," he said.
Several area attorneys are taking over his cases.
While Thursday's docket looked short, Ernst said he is gearing up for Monday, when the schedule has more than 50 proceedings listed.
"I've gotten a lot of advice from a lot of people," Ernst said, the best pieces being: Trust in yourself and relax.
Ernst thanked his family, particularly his wife, for supporting him in the new venture.
"Thank you to my friends for the support I've had throughout the process," he said.
The former judge, Laura Weiser, retired Feb. 28 to pursue a job with a nonprofit organization in Austin.
