Dorothy Moore and Dan C. Gutierrez recently celebrated birthdays and continue to participate in a weekly bowling league among friends. Dorothy turned 91 years old Feb. 5, and Dan turned 90 Jan. 11. They are the oldest senior citizens bowling in league competition in the Victoria USBC Bowling Association.

Steve Dickinson made his presence known in area league play with the top series for the week with the only 700 set bowled last week.

Dickinson was competing in the Friday Mixed League, where he reeled off games of 245, 226 and 247 to total 718 for the night.

He also posted a nice 652 series in another league.

Chris Flores continued his torrid bowling pace from last week with another great effort of 699 in the Monday Mixed League for the second high score.

Other scores of note for the men were Kevin Stacy (697), T.J. Mooney (695/257-692/256-676), Scott Snow (693), Rene Silgero (689-682-265), Mike Stacy (247-689), Brian Hyden (258-683), Tony Bennett 255-682), Abel Garcia (256-677), Calvin Bigham (297-667), Larry Hall (667), Joseph Blount (666), Eddie Gonzales (664) and Steve Zeplin (661).

There were a number of individual high games over 250 bowled by several people.

David Dye struggled through his first two games of Monday Mixed action before finding his groove to string 11 strikes in a row before leaving the 4-7 pins in the last ball for a career high 298 high game.

Bigham will also receive an 11-strikes-in-a-row plaque for a 297 game posted last week. Bill Pontillo (279), Ray Polensky (257), Jesse Longoria (256) and Ray Rendon (252) also scored well.

Christine Speer was high for the women while competing in the Sugar & Spice League.

Speer rolled games of 236, 190 and 203 for a nice set of 629.

Lynda Mikulec also broke the 600 mark with a nice 222-614 total in the same league.

Other nice scores for the women were Lori Heil 236-594, Samantha Wharton 581 and Judy Reyna 580.

Vera Cruz bowlers for the week were Flores 812 (Monday Mixed) and Delores Drake 695 (Sugar & Spice).

Welcome back to Joe Talbott, who after a five-year layoff, is back to league bowling.

PBA NOTES

Jason Sterner won his first PBA title by defeating Wes Malott (Pflugerville) 299-235 in the Don Carter Classic televised last Sunday.

Sterner almost bowled a perfect game but a solid 10 pin leave on the 12th ball left him with a 299 game. The victory allows Sterner to compete in the Tournament of Champions competition scheduled for March 31.

Sunday the PBA Winter Swing tour will conclude with the Earl Anthony PBA Player Championship at noon on ESPN.
