Tips for your first market days

• Arrive early and stay all day

• Visit rain or shine, hot or cold. The show must go on.

• Always wear comfortable shoes.

• Bring a backpack or tote bag so your hands are free to touch, feel and shop.

• Bring plenty of cash. Most vendors prefer cash over checks and credit cards.

• Don't forget to visit the food vendors. The variety is amazing.

When I think of market days, I think Goliad.

One of my first assignments ever was to go the Goliad Market Days one weekend to find a fun feature. I almost didn't come back to Victoria.

The downtown square is packed with white awnings shielding eager shop owners and shoppers from the sometimes angry Texas sun.

Works of arts and crafts, home-sewn clothing and jewelry dazzle the eyes as you walk by, tugging the purse or wallet strings of any buyer, like myself.

These are items you can't find in stores, which makes it all the more enticing.

And the most glorious part - you can somewhat haggle on the price but don't fully count on it.

I would never expect to pay less for some of the amazing items I've seen at Goliad's market days, but it's nice to speak one-on-one with not only the shop owner but also the creator.

Work your charm and admire their pieces. Express that you really enjoy the piece, and maybe they can knock off a few bucks.

Anything goes, really, in the world of outdoor market vending, and trust me, there is a lot of vending. Most times, the market days has more than 150 booths to peruse.

And if shopping antiques and different odds and ends aren't your style, then food definitely might be.

Our appetites here in Texas, especially South Texas, are big.

Now, these prices you can't haggle, but food at the markets is worth every penny.

On the top of my list: trash can fries.

I've seen the food truck out there before, and I know it may sometimes be hit and miss. But once you find it, you don't want to miss it.

I like to get my greasy fried potatoes doused in cheese and chili con carne.

Sounds appetizing, does it not?

Good thing for you is that you do not have to wait too long.

Goliad's next market days event kicks off 9 a.m. Saturday, so load your car, pull out some cash and prepare to be fulfilled.
