Meet Lavaca County's spelling co-champions

BEE PRIZES

Our Regional Spelling Bee Champion will receive: an all-expense paid trip (paid for by the Victoria Advocate) to Washington, D.C., to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee; Samuel Louis Sugarman Award Certificate, donated by Jay Sugarman; a one-year membership to Britannica Online Premium, donated by Encyclopaedia Brittanica and a Webster's Third New International Dictionary, donated by Merriam-Webster.

The 2nd Place Winner will receive a Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, Eleventh Edition, donated by Merriam-Webster.

WHAT: The Regional Spelling Bee

WHEN: 6 p.m., Tuesday

WHERE: Victoria College's Johnson Symposium, 2200 E. Red River St.

COST: Free

Twelve spellers from around the Crossroads will duke it out at the 2013 Regional Spelling Bee Champion.

Each day, we'll feature the co-champions from participating counties.

Thursday's co-champions are from Lavaca County - Trevor Joseph Michael Meyer, of Sweet Home Elementary School , and Brennan Cole Schimcek, of Hallettsville Junior High School.

Name: Trevor Joseph Michael Meyer

Grade: Seventh grade

Age: 12

School: Sweet Home Elementary School.

Past bee victories: None, I've the spelling bee for the last three years, but this is my first time to advance.

Other achievements: Trevor recently received superior ratings at an area music conference for piano and Best of Show for the Sweet Home Junior High division for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo art contest.

Hobbies: Competitive trampoline jumping, plays the trumpet and is taking horseback riding lessons.

Q: What was your winning word?

A: Grabble

Q: What's the weirdest freak-out you've ever witnessed at a spelling bee?

A: When I was in fifth grade, there was a girl in my class who got the word, Canada. She started giggling and started spelling it with a 'K.'

Q: If you win, what do you plan on doing in DC?

A: I want to drive past the Capitol and see the Washington Monument.

Q: How do you practice for the spelling bee?

A: I pretty much just scan the words and definitions and try to lock them in my mind.

Name: Brennan Cole Schimcek

Grade: Eighth grade

Age: 14

School: Hallettsville Junior High School

Past bee victories: Brennan has been in his school's spelling bee for the last five years and has gone to the Lavaca County Spelling Bee for three years. This is his first year to win at the county level.

Other achievements: Brennan has been the president of the HJHS National Junior Honor Society for the past year, he has participated in his school's Geography Bee, as well as placed in UIL calculators, spelling, ready writing and social studies events during his junior high school career. He has been a member of the student council for four years and was a member of the HJHS Yearling Band in seventh grade. He was also a member of the school's Yearling Football team in seventh and eighth grade.

Hobbies: Playing football, golf, XBox, working out, reading.

Fun facts: His favorite season is summer, when he enjoys floating in the Comal River and going to Port Aransas beaches. My sister won her school's bee when she was in the seventh grade.

Q: Who is your favorite Hunger Games character?

A: Katniss Everdeen. She's cool.

Q: If you win, what do you plan on doing in DC?

A: I'm taking my dad with me. He wanted to go to Vegas for his 50th birthday but I think if he gets to go to DC, that'll be just as good.

Q: How do you practice for the spelling bee?

A: My mom reads me the words and I just spell them.
