With budget cuts, benefits revisions, retirement updates and more, one area group said federal employees stand on shaky ground.

But that same group has its sights set on making a difference.

The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association's Victoria chapter, now in its fourth year, meets monthly at Victoria Mall's Community Room, said Noemi E. Galvan, representative for the association's District 14, which covers Victoria, Beeville and Corpus Christi. Its next meeting is 2 p.m. Wednesday.

The association's aim is to support current and retired workers and work on their behalf through lobbyists and the like, said Dan C. Galvan, who is a former vice president of the national organization and works with the area chapter.

Current workers, especially, find themselves faced with price increases for insurance, reductions in what the government will contribute to one's retirement fund and other issues.

"It's really a critical time now," he said. "And it won't get any easier in the next two or three years."

Meetings are open to all current and retired federal employees, and the Galvans said they hope to welcome new members. Dues are $50 per year.
