Fire personnel work at the scene where a vehicle crashed into a traffic light pole on Lone Tree Road at Zac Lentz Parkway. Senior Police Officer David Brogger said one person was killed in the wreck.

Veronica Gonzales believes her mother had the brightest smile in Victoria. And she still can't believe she won't see that smile again.

Her mother, Joann Stanford, 40, was killed after crashing a 2005 Hummer into a traffic light pole on Lone Tree Road at Zac Lentz Parkway at 9:05 a.m. Friday, said Lt. Mike Hernandez of the Victoria Police Department.

"I'm still in disbelief. Everyone is asking me why I'm not crying, and it's because I don't believe it. I called her earlier, and I was texting her. I just feel like I can pick up the phone and call her and she will call me back," Gonzales said.

The impact caused the light to be sheared from its base, and the intersection was closed for several hours. But, a portable stop sign is in place, and the intersection is open, Hernandez said.

Stanford, of Victoria, had three children ages 18-24, Gonzales said. She also had four grandchildren.

Gonzales said her mother was a physical fitness trainer and was working to open her own gym in Victoria. Stanford was passionate about health and was a body builder, able to lift 800 pounds, Gonzales said.

"She had the greatest personality. She could light up the room with her personality," Gonzales described.

The preliminary investigation indicates speed was a factor in the wreck.

Stanford was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace, Precinct 1 Richard Castillo.

Advocate reporter Sonny Long contributed to this report.
