Jorge Cano slaps his knee as a light-footed ballerina glides her way across the wooden-floored studio of Busby Dancenter.
At 81, Cano's body still gets the urge to take to the studio or stage and dance away all the passion in his heart.
But these days, the Mexico City choreographer spends his time teaching; his latest but familiar project - teaching the ballerinas in the Victoria Ballet Theatre some of "Don Quixote Suite," which hits the stage Saturday.
"I love to come back every time they invite me," Cano said in Spanish during a Saturday lunch break.
With only a week left at that point, the rehearsals were longer, stricter and harder, but that's the point, he said.
"What interests me in them (ballerinas) is that they have down the technique, but they need to express," he said, in Spanish.
Cano, who has danced all over the world, has been coming to Busby Dancenter on and off since 1984.
Debbe Busby, director of the studio, enjoys how Cano's knowledge of the classics and how he translates that to the younger dancers.
"He has been instrumental in the growth of the Victoria Ballet Theatre," she said. "Without him, we would not be where we are today. He's my mentor."
The girls in the glass have really taken a liking to him as well, said 15-year-old Avery Fajkus.
Avery, who attends Victoria West, feels she has perfected better her form since being taken under Cano's wing.
Even though rehearsals being a full school day, she enjoys dancing and learning.
"You can definitely tell that he always knows what he's talking about," she said. "He's very good at showing you physically."
Learning is the easy part, Cano said. Expression is where dance really shines.
"Bailar es un placer," he said.
Dance is a pleasure.
