Oceans For Emotions: Lent is time for giving up, adding things

"Lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven."

- Matthew 6:20

During this Lenten time, many people give up things that they really like. For example, my great-nephew, Zach, gave up carbonated drinks. And my best fishing friend decided that the fish had given up biting dead shrimp so we had time to sit and talk about what we really value.

We posed the question to each other that if our houses caught on fire, and we could get only three things out, what would the three things be?

I realize that the three things I've valued the most is my fishing tackle, my 20 gauge shotgun and my Bible that I have used since 1948 when my uncle gave it to me. Those three things are irreplaceable.

My dad gave me an ambassador reel when I was 20, and I knew he couldn't afford it because it was during the '50s drought, and he owned a dry-cleaning plant.

When somebody in Goliad died, my dad would say, "God bless their souls, and I hope it rains." Their souls needed blessing, and we needed the business for when their best clothes got wet."

Besides my fishing tackle, the next thing I would grab would be the 20-gauge shotgun my dad gave me when I was 12 years old. His dad had given it to him when he was 12 years old.

The next thing I would save is my Bible. It is the only Bible I have ever used, and it has symbolic marks under the scriptures that were most important to me at that time in my life.

About that time I felt the ocean creep up around my ankles and the fish started biting again. The valuable memories had to be put aside as I made a new memory and strung my next trout.

Dear Lord, let us use this Lenten time to add the memories of catching trout with my best fishing friend "BFF" at the ocean I love one more time. Lent can be used to add things to our lives as well as give up things in our lives, as long as we glorify You.
