UHV softball splits with Houston Baptist

HOUSTON - The UHV softball team split a doubleheader Tuesday afternoon with Houston Baptist (12-11), winning the first game 9-6 with two big home runs from Alex Holland and Marley Moehrig.
However, the Jaguars (11-17) fell in game two 7-6.
Down 5-1, Holland hit a three-run homer in the fifth and Moehrig topped her the next inning with a grand slam that proved to be the game winning runs.
Holland earned her fourth victory of the season with a complete game performance. She gave up six runs on nine hits and three walks with three strikeouts.
Game 2 saw a similar game flow with Houston Baptist jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the third inning. The Jaguars tied the game with four runs of their own in the sixth and took the lead with a a pair of runs scored in the top of the ninth.
However, Houston Baptist plated three runs in the bottom of the ninth to claim the victory.
Dawn Villegas (2-5) took the loss for UHV, pitching the complete game and gave up seven runs on 10 hits with three walks and nine strikeouts.
Moehrig added to RBI total for the day with another four runs batted in. She finished the day with eight RBI.
