Midday Mafia: Fossati's Delicatessen earns its status

What makes the Frank Napoleon?
The sandwich is named after the man who opened Fossati's Delicatessen and is stacked high with ham, turkey, cheddar and provolone cheeses, lettuce, tomatoes, and smothered with mayo and served on a French bread.

The boys were downtown, collecting a little protection change from some locals when we decided to stroll into a made man's spot, Fossati's Delicatessen. This place was a haunt long before our current group of wise guys even existed and was opened in 1882 in Victoria.
The Mafia received our customary and expected respectful nods as we eased back to the Frank Napoleon room for a little privacy. We were soon joined by another group of lowlifes - a bunch of local lawyers - searching for the same thing, but we managed to talk over them and ruin their lunch. Fossati's was never intended to be trendy or fitting for a business lunch. After all, the bar up front has a trough meant to receive tobacco spit and set up to be flushed outside with a bucket of water. This is a perfect joint for the Mafia; it is not a hoity-toity spot for Biff and Ty to be hanging out.
Jimmy Three Cheese ordered a Frank Napoleon sandwich, stacked with several meats, cheeses and lettuce on a fresh roll. Cheese ordered it hot, and the staff graciously pressed it and served it warm. This treat came with homemade chips and a pickle, things that make Fossati's a deli.
Two Taps had a turkey offering that no doubt had some bean sprouts on it. He gobbled that down while detailing his latest workout routine, much to the chagrin of Walnuts.
Walnuts ordered the pita club, which I must admit was amazing. Four big sandwich wedges on pita bread says "epic" and "traditional" like very few combinations can achieve.
I had a chicken salad melt. It was made with provolone cheese and a fine portion of chicken salad on toasted bread, which was perfect, as expected.
The only trouble was Fossati's does not offer a hamburger. We thought Jack the Knife was going to spin in, but he had a Frank Napoleon and was quite pleased. He ordered dessert for the group after lunch - a hot, chocolate brownie with a generous scoop of ice cream on top. Well played, Jack. Everybody left fat and happy.
The Midday Mafia recommends this old, established Victoria locale for all the right reasons: great food, fair prices and a wonderful staff. Don't forget to check out the trough by the bar on your way out.
