A Howell Middle School student was lured into a truck by a stranger Wednesday afternoon, said Diane Boyett, spokeswoman for VISD.

"The person came and approached him, called him by his fist name and said his parents had been killed in a wreck and he was there to pick him up," Boyett said. "The student got into the pickup truck with this man, and they drove a short distance away from the school."

She said the boy then realized that "something wasn't right" and fled the truck, running back to Howell Middle School, where his mother and a security resource officer were looking for him.

Boyett said all students at Howell were given a letter to take home to parents, explaining the incident and reminding parents of the necessity for safety precautions, even for older students.

Other schools did not receive a letter because it was an isolated incident, Boyett said.

The Victoria County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident.
