Refugio County has applied for a state grant to help save on energy costs by using solar panels.

The commissioners court earlier this month applied for a $250,000 grant through the State Energy Conservation Office.

If accepted, construction could begin as early as summer on the installation of solar panels on the courthouse, which would cover 21 carports, said County Judge Rene Mascorro.

Mascorro said that by placing solar panels in the courthouse, the goal is to cut the cost of electricity spent on the courthouse. The county would save $150,000 over 20 years from the grant.

"(The commissioners) understand this would go beyond our tenure in court and help the community," Mascorro said. "They see the big picture."

The county is expected to learn by April whether it received the grant.
