Before performing any type of weight loss surgery, Dr. Craig Chang wants to be sure patients understand what weight-loss surgery really means.
This is something he believes his patients appreciate, which is why he was voted Best of the Best weight-loss surgeon in the 2013 competition.
"From my standpoint, it's like coaching an athlete," Chang said. "It's a mental and physical discipline. Most people need some coaching to help them change their eating and exercising habits."
Chang said surgery is just one part of weight loss. The other part, he said, is making sure patients stay on a consistent diet to make sure the surgery does not become a waste.
"All the patients who have weight-loss surgery have to make significant changes to their lifestyle," Chang said. "Surgery is not going to do it for them. It's a tool to help them lose weight."
