A spiritual journey from India to Texas
Few Americans know the history of Christianity dates back 2,000 years in India, a predominantly Hindu country.
In 52 A.D., St. Thomas, one of Jesus' Twelve Apostles, came to Kerala, India. Orthodox and Catholic believers in Kerala, known as "The Land of the Gods," point with pride to this rich tradition that stretches back long before European explorers and missionaries started trying to change the world.
Roy Jacob knew this history intimately, growing up in Kerala as a member of a family who traced its lineage to Syria and its history to St. Thomas. For his arranged marriage, he wed a woman who also was of pure Syrian bloodline.
More than 30 years later, Jacob lives halfway around the world in Victoria, where he works at DuPont. He has long since left behind the Orthodox religion, the church of his father, his mother and his ancestors.
