Firefighters open a giant sliding door on the building of Fiberglass Technologies in the 100 block of Huntington Drive, sending plumes of black smoke into the air. No one was injured in the fire Friday, and the cause of the blaze is under investigation.

No one was injured in a Friday night structure fire that broke out just off Houston Highway.

A call came in at 7:43 p.m. that Fiberglass Technologies, 109 Huntington Drive, was on fire, said Roger Hempel, battalion chief with the Victoria Fire Department.

Crews with the city and county fire departments arrived to find heavy smoke coming from the structure and a small fire. No one was inside.

They extinguished exterior flames before moving indoors, where they found fire in the building's back corner, near equipment.

It took about 10 minutes to put the fire out, Hempel said, noting crews took precautions because of chemicals inside.

The building sustained extensive smoke damage and moderate equipment damage.

David Phillips, assistant fire chief for Victoria County, said the blaze began outside in a mold the company uses to create fiberglass. It then spread inside.

No cause has been determined, he said, and the fire remains under investigation.

Angie Ort co-owns Victoria Marine, a nearby business, with her husband, John Ort. She noticed smoke when she walked outside and alerted her husband.

"I ran to get my camera then stepped into a boat for a better look," he said. "We saw black smoke first, flames second."

John Livengood, a mechanic with Victoria Marine, suggested saving some of Fiberglass Technologies' boats after John Ort called for help. He and John Ort loaded one up and hauled it away, but fire crews prevented them from going back for others.

Livengood said he wished he could have done more, but was glad they did what they could.

"We were just being neighborly," he said. "Anything we could do to help."
