Land clearing begins for olive farm

May 10, 2013 at 12:10 a.m.

A crew clears land off U.S. Highway 59 at what will soon become a Victoria olive farm. The project's first phase calls for 201,000 olive trees on 300 acres of land, said Jim Henry with Texas Olive Ranch. The project also includes a visitors center, processing and bottling facility and gift shop. Planting is slated to span June and July and, once in full production, Henry said, the orchard will produce about 1,500 tons of olives, or 48,000 gallons of olive oil.
