In observance of National Peace Officers Memorial Day, the Victoria Police Department and the Victoria County Sheriff's Office, along with other area law enforcement agencies, will hold a memorial service at 9 a.m. Wednesday at De Leon Plaza in downtown Victoria.

The ceremony will include reading of a city proclamation and a county resolution, memorial presentation, reading of the roll call of fallen Texas officers and the placement of a memorial wreath, according to a news release from the Victoria Police Department.

The public is invited to attend.

National Police Week is May 12-18. This week has been designated as a time to remember those city, county, state and federal law enforcement officers who gave their lives to safeguard the lives and property of their fellow citizens and to recognize the service given by the men and women who continue to serve as law enforcement officers, according to the news release.

In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a law designating May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week containing May 15 as National Police Week.

To honor these fallen officers, people are encouraged to display blue ribbons on their car antennas.

Ribbons are available free at the Victoria Police Department's Records Section at 105 W. Juan Linn St., the police sub-station in Victoria Mall next to Sears and the Victoria County Sheriff's Office at 101 N. Glass St.
