Jaguars lose opener at NAIA softball tournament
LUBBOCK - Janelle Odor hit a grand slam to lead Friends University to a 9-3 win over UHV in the NAIA National Championship Opening Round Tournament on Monday at Plains Capital Park.
The No. 3 seeded Jaguars fell to 29-21 and will play an elimination game against No. 4 seeded Northwood University on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
Top seed Lubbock Christian claimed a 9-5 win over Northwood on Monday.
UHV had taken a 3-1 lead on a two-run home run by Alex Holland in the top of the fourth inning.
But the No. 2 seeded Lady Falcons (43-6) forged ahead with three runs in the bottom of the fourth, before breaking the game open on Odor's home run, which followed a double by Christian Downs and a pair of walks.
The Lady Falcons had seven hits and also took advantage of seven walks issued by UHV starting pitcher Dawn Villegas.
Holland and Krissa Powell each had two of the Jaguars' five hits.
UHV also scored in the third on a single by Powell and a double by Ashley Shannon.
