The Victoria Generals have bolstered their pitching staff with the addition of three players.
Ganado graduate Glenn Sparkman from Wharton County Junior College, Toller Boardman from the University of Texas, and Matt McClain from St. Mary's University will join the team for the upcoming Texas Collegiate League season.
"Toller, Glenn, and Matt are all three very talented pitchers," Blake Koch, the Generals vice president and general manager said in a news release. "These three guys all have a good chance of playing pro ball in the near future."
Sparkman, a right-hander, went 5-4 with a 2.78 ERA in his redshirt sophomore season at Wharton County. Generals coach Stephen Flora was his pitching coach with the Pioneers.
Sparkman, who was clocked in the mid-90s, pitched five complete games and led the team with 59 strikeouts in 77.2 innings.
He has signed with Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and has a good chance of being selected in the Major League Baseball amateur draft in June.
"Glenn had a great year at Wharton as a starter and has really caught the attention of several scouts in the area," Koch said. "Since he threw so many innings during the spring, we'll most likely use him out of the bullpen as our closer to keep his workload down this summer."
Boardman, a left-hander from Houston Bellaire, has appeared in eight games as a redshirt freshman after taking medical redshirt in 2012. He has five strikeouts in 6.1 innings.
McClain, a sophomore left-hander from San Antonio Reagan, was recently named to the All-Heartland Conference second team.
He has an 8-4 record with 2.21 ERA and 103 strikeouts in 101.2 innings going into Thursday's NCAA Division II South Central Regional tournament in Kingsville.
The Generals open the season Thursday, May 30 at The Woodlands Strykers. The Generals home opener will be Tuesday, June 4 against the Texas Marshals at Riverside Stadium.
