Lecture at Museum of the Coastal Bend to discuss Victoria's French colony
May 15, 2013 at 12:15 a.m.
The Museum of the Coastal Bend will host a lecture by archaeologist James Bruseth about Victoria's Fort St. Louis excavation between 1999-2002.
The work, conducted by the Texas Historical Commission, confirmed the current Victoria County as the location of the explorer La Salle's French settlement established in 1685.
The presentation will include Bruseth's first-hand experience as he was the principal investigator for the excavation and project director for the excavation of La Salle's ship, La Belle, in Matagorda Bay in 1996-97.
He is in the midst of designing exhibits for other Texas museums that will include excavation materials and research about what scholars discovered about the French colony that once existed in Victoria County.
The lecture is open to the public and will accept donations as admission. Light refreshments will be served.
