Port Lavaca police are canvassing a neighborhood near Chocolate Bayou Park where a woman was assaulted Tuesday.
A 59-year-old Port Lavaca woman was exercising in the area of Jackson Street and Purple Sage Drive when the incident occurred.
A relative reported it to police at 6:20 a.m. She was taken by ambulance from the scene to Memorial Medical Center but then transferred to a Victoria hospital, where her condition was not known Wednesday, Police Chief James Martinez said.
So far, the lead detective on the case, Colin Rangnow, has not been able to interview the woman.
Investigators are also awaiting the results of medical evaluations that will offer a clearer picture of the extent of the woman's injuries. Because of this, Martinez would not confirm whether this was a sexual assault.
The Calhoun County Sheriff's Office, the Texas Rangers and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice is assisting with the investigation because they have additional resources.
On Tuesday, police used state prison tracking dogs to pick up on the scent of a suspect.
He did not say whether that yielded any results or whether police were looking for more than one suspect. The dogs were not utilized Wednesday.
"We're looking for anybody that may be involved in this," Martinez said. "We've also had countless phone calls with people wanting to share information that they had thought might be helpful."
He again warned residents not to walk alone in the dark.
