UHV softball wins once, but falls in final to Lubbock Christian
LUBBOCK - UHV defeated Lubbock Christian once, but couldn't do it again.
The Jaguars' season came to an end in the championship game of the NAIA National Championship Opening Round Tournament.
Dawn Villegas pitched a three-hitter to lead UHV (32-22) to a 5-1 win over the top-seeded Lady Chaps on Wednesday at PlainsCapital Park.
But Lubbock Christian (58-8) came back to take an 8-3 win in the decisive game.
Villegas struck out four and walked five and was backed by errorless defense in the first game.
Alex Holland went 2 for 3 with a two-run home run in the fourth inning for UHV.
Ashley Shannon added a solo home run in the fifth.
The Lady Chaps' lone run came on a solo home run by Megan Sullivan in the top of the first inning.
UHV got off to a good start in the second game as Marley Moehrig hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning.
But Lubbock Christian scored six runs in the third inning, highlighted by Stephanie Rendon's grand slam.
Holland had two of the Jaguars' six hits.
Villegas started the second game and suffered the loss after pitching into the fourth inning.
Lubbock Christian advances to the National Championship Tournament scheduled for May 24-30 in Columbus, Ga.
