We see them every day. We watch for them as we drive around town. We teach our children to run to them when in need, but we sink lower in our seats when the red and blue lights flash in our rear-view mirrors.

These are law enforcement officers. Every day, they go to work at a job that requires them to put their lives on the line to serve and protect complete strangers. Each day, they face the constant contradictions of suspicion and respect, insults and gratitude, violence and handshakes. Every day is different and every call could be anything from a minor incident to an extremely dangerous situation.

Wednesday was National Peace Officer's Day, and law enforcement personnel from the Victoria Police Department, the Victoria County Sheriff's Department and members of the Victoria Police Academy attended a ceremony in DeLeon Plaza honoring fallen officers and those who continue to serve our community. At the ceremony, County Commissioner Danny Garcia read a proclamation declaring this week as Peace Officers Memorial Week and Wednesday as Peace Officers Memorial Day.

We are glad to see our community continues to honor peace officers every year. These brave men and women have proven through their years of hard work and training their commitment to providing the best protection possible to our hometown and county. Even in the midst of losing co-workers to other departments and waiting years for better pay, our city's police department continued pushing forward in its efforts to keep our community safe and cut back on crime.

We are proud to see such strong, selfless men and women working to defend our community over the years and in the years to come. We know they give their all every day, through good and bad times, to ensure the safety of what is not just our hometown but theirs as well.

Most of all, we are grateful to the sacrifices made by the fallen officers who were honored at Wednesday's ceremony. Every name read from that list was a peace officer who made the ultimate sacrifice, and we are humbled by their commitment to our hometown's safety.

Thank you to all of the peace officers in the Crossroads. Thank you for putting on your uniform every day and taking a stand to protect our communities. Your strength inspires us, and we wish you well as you continue in your never-ending efforts to protect and serve.
