Hallettsville edges East Bernard to take series lead

Hallettsville's Chris Jones dives for a fly ball to right field during Game 1 of the Brahmas' regional quarterfinal playoff series with East Bernard in Weimar. Hallettsville won 6-5 with a run in the seventh to take a 1-0 series lead.

WEIMAR - Weston Seay expected nothing less than a battle when he stepped to the plate against East Bernard reliever Ty Slanina.

Hallettsville had runners on first and second with one out in the top of the seventh inning in a tie game.

"He was bringing it in there pretty good," Seay said. "I knew after I fouled so many off he was going to try and throw some kind of off-speed, and he got it in there."

Seay's single to shallow center brought home courtesy runner Dalton Herrington with what proved to be the winning run in Hallettsville's 6-5 win in Game 1 of the best-of-three Class 2A regional quarterfinal series Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Park Strickland Field.

The Brahmas improved to 28-3 and will try and wrap up the series when they return to Veterans Memorial Park for Game 2 on Saturday at 2 p.m. Game 3, if necessary, will follow Game 2.

The lead changed hands three times, and the game was tied twice before Hallettsville pushed across its final run in the seventh on Seay's hit that followed singles by Reagan McAda and Will Wallace off East Bernard starter Jacob Vincek.

"I think we had a few jitters," said Hallettsville coach Shorty Cook. "I'm real proud of our ballclub. They just have a lot of tenacity. East Bernard has got the same thing. They are some battlers. They compete and we know this thing's not over."

Hallettsville had to overcome a 3-1 deficit after committing three errors in the first inning. East Bernard (22-5) also had eight hits against McAda, who worked into the seventh before being relieved by Nate Kowalik.

"With a team like East Bernard that can really hit the ball well," McAda said. "You just know it's going to be a tough one that you've got to grind out. I just try and tell myself to get outs and keep the ball down. Let the defense work and know that they'll be behind my back the whole time."

Hallettsville took a 5-3 lead in the fifth on a RBI single by Kowalik and a sacrifice fly by Seay.

But East Bernard tied the game with three hits in the bottom of the inning, including Vincek's second RBI hit.

"East Bernard's a competitive team," Seay said. "They won state in football. They're known for being competitors."

Hallettsville wouldn't back down either and Seay made it pay off.

"We hit the ball hard all night," he said. "It didn't fall for us every time, but eventually a little dinker got us the win."
