Widow named to Shiner school board seat

The widow of the man who won re-election to the Shiner school board after he died has been appointed to his seat.

Melinda Mills, 45, said she knows her husband Rusty Mills would be pleased.

"I know he's smiling right now. We're not originally from here, but we have learned to love this community. He's saying, 'OK, here we go,'" said Mills, who has a son in the fifth grade.

"I am very excited about the opportunity," she said. "I offered my services to the board if they thought I would be the appropriate person in the position.

"This is a great tribute to Rusty."

The vote was unanimous Wednesday night to appoint Mills to the seat, said Shiner Superintendent Trey Lawrence.

Mills will serve one year, and an election will be held next year for a full three-year term.

Rusty Mills' name had to remain on the ballot for the May 11 election because he died after a state-imposed deadline.

Mills is an executive consultant for Rodan and Field Dermatologists.
