Parents should be responsible dropping kids off
Editor, the Advocate:
As a parent of children that attend schools here in VISD, of course, dropping them off in the mornings can be - well, let's just say an "adventure," and not always a great one at that. You have your morning traffic, school zones, the occasional accident and numerous other variables that can come into play.
I have noticed one thing that seems to stick in my mind, though, and feel that it is time that someone finally says something. Parents of children at Howell Jr. High who are dropping your kids off in the Faith Family parking lot and making them cross Mockingbird Lane just because it's "more convenient" for you ought to be ashamed of yourselves. Not only that, but this morning I saw a parent drop two very young children off near the convenience store across from Rowland Elementary and make them cross Mockingbird Lane to get to the school. Geez, imagine if everyone did this!
Is it too much trouble to leave your house a few minutes earlier each morning and get in line to drop off your children like the rest of us have to do? There is no crossing guard at the light at Rowland. Sometimes, there is one on duty at the Howell crossing, but this is clearly unsafe and is an accident waiting to happen. If your kids have to walk to school and use these crossings, that's one thing, but if you are transporting them in a vehicle and dropping them off in random parking lots to cross, that is just pure laziness. Get in line and deal with it or - like I stated before - leave your house a few minutes earlier each day, as there is no excuse for this.
Everyone else has to go through the line, so why should you be different? Think of the safety of your kids because that's the most important thing. There are too many crazy drivers in this town, so why expose your children to unnecessary dangers? It just doesn't make any sense.
