Is the University of Houston-Victoria offering any summer activities for area children?
With summer around the corner, the University of Houston-Victoria is busy planning several types of camps for area children.
If your child is into sports, why not have them gain more experience in one of the most popular sports in the world - soccer? UHV soccer coach Adrian Rigby will lead several summer camps for boys and girls ages 4 to 17. The campers are grouped based on age, playing ability and experience. All campers receive a free camp T-shirt and a soccer ball.
The first camp will be June 3-7 at the Bill Witt Soccer Complex, 6869 Yorktown Blvd. in Corpus Christi. The second camp will be in Victoria June 24-28 at the UHV Soccer Field, 3007 N. Ben Wilson St.
Campers can attend 9 a.m.-noon, 5:30-8:30 p.m. or both morning and afternoon sessions. The early registration cost for one camp is $120 or $170 to attend both sessions.
Rigby also will host an elite team camp for soccer teams in the area. This camp will be 5:30-8:30 p.m. June 15-19 at the UHV Soccer Field. The early registration cost is $120 per child.
Early registration ends 10 days before each camp start date. For more information about the soccer camps, email email@example.com or call 361-485-4418.
If you have an older child who is interested in computer science, UHV has the perfect camp. The UHV Digital Simulation and Robotics Camp will introduce high school students to basic concepts in robotics, digital simulation and engineering. Campers will use LEGO NXT Mindstorm 2.0 robotics kits. They also will learn how to use digital gaming and animation software.
The free camp will be 9 a.m.-4 p.m. June 17-21 on the UHV campus. Campers have the option of getting a glimpse of college life by staying in one of UHV's residence halls. The camper room and board fee is $300. Six scholarships are available to cover dorm fees for campers living outside Victoria.
The camp is part of a grant from Alcoa Foundation that also supports a yearlong robotics course for high school students and the UHV/Victoria College Math & Computer Science Awareness Day.
Only 12 spots are available. Students entering ninth grade, in high school or just graduating are eligible to attend the camp. The registration deadline is May 29.
