Refugio infielder Jackie Gonzalez, left, and pitcher Cecilia Bauer embrace after their playoff win over Boling. Refugio beat Boling 14-1 in six innings and will face Santa Gertrudis Academy or Danbury next weekend in the regional final.

WEIMAR - Cecilia Bauer didn't want to allow Boling any chances at the plate.

For the most part, she was successful, with the Lady Bulldogs only getting one run.

Refugio scored runs when it needed to and defeated Boling 14-1 in a one-game regional semifinal Friday evening that ended in the sixth inning via mercy rule.

Bauer allowed just four hits and saved a run from scoring with a throw to home plate in the fourth inning for an out. At the plate, she helped the Lady Cats with a triple to right-center field to score the first run of the game for Refugio.

"I wanted to carry this team to the finals," Bauer said. "Everyone had their heads screwed on straight, and we didn't make a lot of errors."

The Lady Cats knew that one player was not going to get them to success, as they piled on runs throughout the game.

After scoring two runs in the first inning, they scored six runs with two outs in the fourth and fifth innings. Michelle Rosas hit an RBI double to left field, followed by Jackie Gonzalez hitting a single that scored two runners in the fourth inning. In the fifth, they scored three runs.

In the sixth inning, they scored five runs, sealing the fate of the Bulldogs

Refugio coach Cortney Hunkapillar wanted her team to come out swinging. The plan she said was to score runs early, and help Bauer out defensively.

"They always know that with two outs, they have to focus," Hunkapillar said. "Our plan was to stay focused, and see the ball all the way through."

Kiasha Brown reached on based in the fifth inning after an error was made by Boling's second basemen on which three runs scored. Brown said she wanted to do her part to give Bauer a comfortable lead.

"I was trying to accomplish me not making any errors for my team," she said.

Bauer also helped herself at the plate, but not necessarily by swinging the bat. She had a hit, but walked three times in the game. Also making major contributions was junior leadoff hitter Morgan Klaevemann, who was 4 for 4 in the game with three stolen bases and an RBI.

Bauer said she's happy about the win and wants to keep the season going. The goal now, she added, is to field better. Refugio committed one error in the game, but Bauer said they want to commit none.

"We're going to have to play solid defense," she said. "The team that makes the least amount of errors is going to win that battle."

The win advances the Lady Cats to the regional finals, where they will face either Santa Gertrudis Academy or Danbury. Santa Gertrudis Academy leads that series after beating the the Lady Panthers 7-1 at the O'Connor Sports Complex on Friday night.
