High school students attend Victoria College's Nursing Field Day
Twenty-four students attended Victoria College's Nursing Field Day.
They toured the simulation lab and heard presentations on certified nurse aide, licensed vocational nurse and associate degree nursing programs.
Marilyn Powell, allied health coordinator and instructor, described the certified nurse aide program. Darla Guajardo, director of nursing, discussed some of the rewards of a nursing career.
Alison Hewig, ADN program chair and instructor, cited the requirements to get into nursing school and highlighted some of the numerous career paths that nursing offers.
The students also toured the nursing simulation labs and control rooms. Mary Kitchens, nursing laboratory assistant, and Monica Hamilton, nursing simulation specialist and lab coordinator, explained how mannequin patients can be controlled to simulate a living person.
Various lab mannequins were available in different sizes, genders, shapes, ages and ethnicities to give nursing students practice in caring for more than one type of patient.
