Port Lavaca police are still searching for the masked man who they say assaulted a woman near Chocolate Bayou Park during the early morning hours of May 14.

The 59-year-old woman, who was exercising in the area of Jackson Street and Purple Sage Drive, has been released from the hospital, Chief James Martinez said Monday.

Martinez still cannot confirm whether it was a sexual assault because evidence collected at the scene needs to be tested.

Detective Colin Rangnow said the attack appears to be random, which is unusual for the area.

"Usually, your victims will know the attacker in some form or fashion," he said.

The only consistent description police have received of the suspect after canvassing houses nearby is that he is a short white or Hispanic man, who was wearing a mask, Rangnow said.

"We're doing our best to get this done, and we're taking it very personal," he said.
