Generals sign Memorial grad as pitcher

May 21, 2013 at 12:21 a.m.

Memorial graduate Daniel Tunchez will pitch for the Victoria Generals again this summer.

Tunchez appeared in 11 games for the Generals during the 2012 Texas Collegiate League season.

He had a 3-2 record with a 3.90 ERA and had two saves. Tunchez had 16 strikeouts in 25.1 innings.

"Daniel was a big pickup for us last summer and really impressed everyone with his competitiveness," said Blake Koch, the Generals vice president and general manager, in a news release. "Daniel always wanted the ball in big situations and was a big asset to our bullpen."

Tunchez played basketball in high school but has spent the last two seasons pitching at Eastfield College in Mesquite.

He moved from the bullpen into the starting rotation this season. He had a 2-4 record and 2.59 ERA with 50 strikeouts in 55.2 innings.

Tunchez is currently being recruited by several schools in the Southland Conference, but has yet to make a decision on where he will transfer next season.

"Daniel has a bright future ahead of him in the game of baseball," Koch added. "He seems to get better and better each time he steps out onto the mound."

The Generals open the season May 30 at The Woodlands Strykers.

They play their home opener against the Texas Marshals on June 4 at Riverside Stadium.
