Everyone has dreams and choices. Every day, we make choices that either move us forward or hold us back. Our choices are what determine if we will reach our dreams or remain where we are.
The Golden Crescent Habitat for Humanity is already known for helping people accomplish their dream of owning a home, but the organization also wants to impact and transform the community, Cynthia Staley, executive director, said. That desire is reflected in the group's mission statement: "Seeking to put God's love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build Homes, Communities and Hope."
In its effort to accomplish this and inspire community members to reach for their dreams, Habitat started the Speaking of Sweat Equity Series. In 2012, the group brought Bethany Hamilton, a professional surfer who lost her arm in a shark attack when she was 13, to Victoria. Then May 7, Emmitt Smith became the latest speaker in this series. The Dallas Cowboys star and "Dancing with the Stars" champion and Hamilton both shared stories of hard work, perseverance, discipline and personal accountability as they pushed forward to reach their dreams.
Now, Habitat wants to know who you want to hear speak in Victoria. We all have personal heroes and stories that inspire us, so why not share that inspiration with others? The next speaker needs to be someone who understands what it takes to pursue a dream, Staley said. The speaker should know how to encourage others to reach for dreams and accomplish their goals. Athletes are easy subjects because they understand the value of constantly pushing and working toward improvement.
The truth is, people today often blame others for their situations, but it is our own individual choices that determine who we are today and where we will go tomorrow, Staley said. Habitat wants to bring speakers to Victoria who can emphasize this and show others what they can and must do to succeed.
We encourage our readers to submit their suggestions for the next speaker in the Speaking of Sweat Equity Series. Choose your favorite author, actor or maybe the CEO of an international company and email your suggestion to Cynthia@goldencrescenthabitat.org or leave a comment on this editorial online.
We all need some inspiration from time to time. Help yourself and others succeed by sharing your suggestion with the Golden Crescent Habitat for Humanity.
