Three Masses are scheduled in conjunction with the annual Shiner Catholic Church Spring Picnic. A Polka Mass will be at 5 p.m. Saturday; regular Masses will be at 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Sunday. All will be at the Sts. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church, 306 S. Avenue F.
Any good picnic has to have good hamburgers, and the 27th annual Shiner Catholic Church Spring Picnic this weekend is no exception.
With that in mind, the chairpersons for this year's event at the Knights of Columbus park - Dandy Kloesel and Monica Peters - approved construction of a new hamburger stand and bought a third grill to keep up with the demand.
"We have always run out of hamburgers early in the evening, so this year, we're also adding 30 percent more burgers," said Mildred Targac, picnic publicity chairwoman.
Picnic events begin Saturday with a 6:30 p.m. sunset fun run.
The beer stand will be open, and hamburgers will be available. Bill Pekar and the Rainey Brothers will perform outside from 7 to 10 p.m. There will also be activities for children.
On Sunday, the country store featuring kolaches, pigs in a blanket and canned and baked goods will open at 8 a.m.
At 10:30 a.m., registration begins for a motorcycle run.
Lunch will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the air conditioned Knights of Columbus Hall in the KC Park, 102 S. Ave. G.
Plates to-go will be served from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the American Legion Hall, 1972 alternate U.S. Highway 90 E.
All plates are $8.50.
The menu includes three meats - the famous Shiner picnic stew, country sausage and fried chicken.
A Memorial Day tribute will be held at 11:45 a.m, followed by a country auction with many unique items up for sale, including cattle, homemade quilts, antiques, Spoetzl Brewery memorabilia, homemade pastries, noodles and hundreds of other items. A cattle auction will begin at 3 p.m.
Free music will be in the hall starting at 11 a.m. with live accordion music.
The Shiner Hobo Band will perform from 2 to 4 p.m., and the Texas Legacy Czech Band from 4 to 8 p.m.
The evening dance will be from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. featuring The Emotions and The Crooks.
Outside, music will be performed by the Jungemeisters from 1 to 2 p.m. and the Chris Rybak Band from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Los Kolaches will be featured from 7:30 to 11:30 p.m.
More than 30 prizes are included in the 10 p.m. raffle drawing, including a 2013 Mahindra tractor with loader and trailer.
Other attractions will include arts and crafts booths, old-fashioned bingo, a grocery wheel, fish pond, ring toss, plant and cake wheels and games for children
