Golfer gets back into swing of things after years away

Bardie Whitfield

Bardie Whitfield is glad to be back on the golf course after 43 years off from playing competitively.

Competing in the Victoria City Golf Championship ladies division this weekend, the 62-year-old from Goliad is in the lead heading into Sunday after 18 holes.

"My goal for these next three days is to be consistent," Whitfield said.

While the city championship is her first time competing with others, Whitfield grew up playing golf. Her father was a golf pro in Cuero, she said.

In her early years, Whitfield was an avid golfer, playing every chance she got. She played in her first golf tournament when when she was 6 years old. It was not until she got married that her playing golf was not as frequent as she expected it to be.

"There wasn't time to play golf," she said. "My husband was a cutting horse trainer. We were on the road, showing horses. It was fun."

Whitfield said her husband and herself played a few times a year, but it wasn't anywhere near a competitive level. Those times of playing together, however, were not long.

Last June, Whitfield's husband, John, passed away. It was a difficult moment for her family, she said.

Whitfield's son Butch, 39, like her mother, enjoys playing golf. He said after his father died, his mother found playing golf as a way to clear her head.

"It gave her an escape to free her mind from the whole situation," Butch said. "She just picked it up last year. It's amazing. The fact she can be competitive again is pretty impressive."

Whitfield signed up for a membership at Riverside Golf Course in the fall. Through golf, she connected with friend Luana Thompson as a partner on the course.

"She was playing by herself. We asked her to play," Thompson said. "She's got the best mental game because she never gets rattled."

During Saturday's first round of play, which was suspended twice, Whitfield didn't worry.

"I love to play golf," she said. "I always had."

Happy to be back in the sport she grew up playing, Whitfield looks forward to the next journey of where golf will take her.

"You never know what you're going to do," she said. "Every day is a challenge."

TOURNAMENT NOTES

• Weather wreaked havoc on the start of the tournament. Rain washed out half of the junior flights as well as half of the first, second and fourth flights for the men's tournament at Riverside Golf Course, and all of the third and fifth flights. The ladies and championship flights were able to complete 18 holes.

•  UHV's top golfer, Vance Edwards, coming off an appearance at the NAIA national championships in Salem, Ore., leads the championship flight after posting a 69 on Saturday.

• Play for the men's flights shifts to Victoria Country Club on Sunday morning. The women and the junior division are at the Club at Colony Creek on Sunday morning.
