My First Job: Joe Humphreys

• Name: Joe Humphreys

• Age: 63

• City of residence: Raisin

• Current title: Director of the University of Houston-Victoria Small Business Development Center

• First job: I grew up on a farm, so when I started walking, I started working. For my first paid job, though, I had an old truck I used to haul grain to town.

• What it taught me: That was really where my entrepreneurial world got its start. Farmers are probably the most conservative group of people there are, but they're also the biggest gamblers in the world. You have weather to contend with and one shot at revenue. Growing up with that, I guess making money was fun. You were doing work and getting paid.
