When he's not at school or taking a cat nap, you'll find Steven Lin on the basketball court.

It's where he feels at peace, said the 18-year-old Victoria East High School class salutatorian.

"I like shooting hoops," Lin said. "It's something I do to relax."

In between dribbles on the court, Lin thinks about what he can do to get through the worst of his senioritis.

The stress of meeting his own expectations and following in the footsteps of his older sister, who graduated last year as VEHS' salutatorian, have been kept at bay with a moderate appetite of basketball, tennis and lots of reading.

Lin said he likes to spend hours pouring over science fiction and anime novels during study breaks.

"Harry Potter is probably my favorite," Lin said. "And no, I haven't read the Game of Thrones books yet - I haven't decided whether or not they're worth my time."

During the school year, Lin said he would study for about 15 to 40 hours a week, depending on his workload.

For the summer, Lin plans to maintain his studious regiment in preparation for his first semester at the University of Texas at Austin.

"I'm relearning chemistry right now," Lin said. "This summer, I might also go to VC and take a few courses there."

Lin will start his freshman year as biology major on a pre-med track at UT.

He plans to enter medical school and become a doctor.

"I want to be able to take care of my mom and dad," Lin said. "Pediatrics could be interesting."

Lin was born in New Jersey and moved to Victoria with his family when he was 3 years old.

Lin's father, Alan Lin, works as a chemical engineer at Formosa, and his mother, Jeannie Hwang, is the family's homemaker and accountant.

Out of all his high school courses, Lin said he is going to miss geography the most.

"Pretty much all my friends were in there," Lin said. "We had a pretty good time talking in there."

Melissa Clark, VEHS's senior class valedictorian, has been in most of his classes throughout high school.

Although they've known each other since second grade, Lin described their friendship as studious, not competitive.

"I had no chance," Lin said in regards to his past attempts at beating her in class rank. "She's in her own league; she's too good."
