IF YOU GO

• WHAT: 2013 Victoria Bach Festival (kickoff)

• WHEN: 7:30 p.m. Saturday

• WHERE: First United Methodist Church, 407 N. Bridge Street

• COST: $25-$30

There are few things in the world that can add a certain kind of propensity to life's duller moments.

Classical music achieves this effortlessly.

Claude Debussy's "Clair de Lune" turns an afternoon spent doing house chores and the folding of linens into a methodical, solitary ballet.

Baking a routine batch of blueberry muffins starts to feel like you're preparing a feast fit for kings with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "Op.66" from his 1890 "Sleeping Beauty" ballet score.

And J.S. Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D minor" transforms your ride back home from last night's party into a winding, hypnotic path to sweet slumber.

If you're in a transcendent mood this weekend, check out the 2013 Victoria Bach Festival.

This year's theme and focus are the works of Ludwig van Beethoven.

The blue banner is already waving over Main Street, and a printable version of the schedule is available online.

Conspirare's Company of Voices and the Victoria Bach Festival string ensemble will kick off the weeklong celebration of music at the First United Methodist Church with music written by American composer Robert Kyr.

You can even mingle with Kyr, who has composed 12 symphonies, three chamber symphonies and three violin concerti, an hour before the concert begins.

Johnson describes the festival finale - with more than 250 musicians including the Victoria Bach Festival Orchestra, Victoria Bach Festival Chorus, Conspirare Symphonic Choir, Conspirare and Texas State Chorale performing Beethoven's Missa Solemnis - as a roof-raising experience.

So what do you say? Let's send our fancy concert-going outfits to the cleaners and transcend time through next Saturday.
