Wharton's gospel singer Tamara Chauniece Williams performed a different kind of song during the live shows of NBC's "The Voice" singing competition show.

Williams, 23, who goes by the name Tamara Chauniece on the show, performed the 1978 Gloria Gaynor hit "I Will Survive," chosen by her voice coach Cee Lo Green.

"She's a strong-willed young lady, and I wanted to her to sing something for her personality," said Green on the show.

During the judges' comments, Adam Levine complimented her growth from the auditions to the live shows.

"You had your best performance at the best time," he said on the show. "You were so strong."

Blake Shelton applauded her great sense of style and also her ability to sing such a classic hit.

"That song is a tall order, and you did a great job," he said.

Green rounded out the judges' comments with his critiques on her ability to take the song and add her own style to it.

He also commented on Williams' ability to captivate the audience.

"The energy was electric," said Green. "It's the kind of energy we need on this show."

Tuesday ended the first round of live shows, where the television audience will vote on the Top 12 performers. The two contestants with the lowest number of votes from each team will be eliminated. A special Thursday episode of "The Voice" will reveal which contestants will continue on the show and will air at at 7 p.m.
