Junior high students in the Crossroads can get a jolt of knowledge in the electronics field at Monday's SparkFun event at the Children's Discovery Museum of the Golden Crescent.
"We are beginning to offer more (science, technology, engineering and math) related programs, and this event falls right in line with that goal/mission," said Melissa Dixon, the museum's executive director.
Victoria is the SparkFun National Tour's only stop in Texas as it makes 50 stops in 50 states, according to a news release from the museum.
Instructors teach lifelong skills like programming, soldering and building circuits.
Todd and Leilani Valdes donated the cost of the SparkFun tour stop.
"My kids know how to use my smartphone better than I do," said Todd Valdes.
"I got to thinking that if I had started learning about technology, electronics and computing earlier in life, it would be a lot easier for me to understand technology.
"I hope that this SparkFun event will provide some background for our kids and perhaps get them interested in exploring these topics further and make it a career."
The eight-hour workshop will conclude with 20 of the SparkFun Inventor's Kits donated to students, allowing them to continue developing their skills after the workshop at school and at home, according to the news release.
The program aligns with Texas standardized testing curriculum.
Middle-school grade students are encouraged to attend the workshop.
"Younger students are welcome to attend as well if they have an adult mentor with them during the class," Dixon said.
"We are starting to offer programs, workshops and camps to older students who we have not reached in the past, specifically up to about age 12."
The cost for SparkFun is $20 and includes lunch, a snack and an event T-shirt.
Space is limited and preregistration is required.
