DeLeon Plaza will transform into a battleground Nov. 23 and 24 for the Victoria BlockParty.

Bert Jones and his wife, Pamela Jones, both of Victoria County, wanted to create an event for Victoria families that they could call their own.

After spending their weekends working as vendors at different area events, including Bootfest, Jamfest and Cinco de Mayo, the pair decided it was time to host their own two-day event.

"We wanted to take our experience from other shows that we've done and push toward bigger and better things," said Bert, 35.

In addition to hosting their inaugural event, Bert, who is in the agriculture business, said the Boys and Girls Club of Victoria is partnering with Hartman Distributing and will receive a portion of the sales from the Victoria BlockParty.

As part of the entertainment lineup, there will be a battle of the bands competition in which bands will compete for a title of the best band at the Victoria BlockParty and $500.

Bert is in preparing the show and said there is still room to sign up for the competition.

"You can be country, rock, R&B," he said about the battle of the bands.

Bert and his wife were looking for a way to showcase the area's talent and came up with the battle of the bands idea.

The Scott Taylor Band and Latin and soul singer Hilda Lamas will perform during the two-day event.

"It's free to sign up, and the event is free to the public," he said

The event will include food and market vendors as well as a kids' zone.

This will be like the Coors Light Street Dances with a mix of the Victoria Market Days, he said.

"It's just a win-win situation," he said. "Vendors like us get one more event to earn extra income before the holidays and a great organization receives part of the proceeds."
