Fashion tips with Haili Z: Columnist takes bite out Big Apple
I had the chance to attend an invite-only, two-day conference with Lucky Magazine in New York City. During the conference, I sat in the front row to sit in on a private interview between Eva Chen, editor-in-chief of Lucky Magazine, and actresses Kate Bosworth and Eva Mendes.
As a first-time New Yorker (just within this year, I have attended Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in February and the Lucky Magazine Fashion and Beauty Blogger Conference last week), I definitely made myself look like a rookie while getting lost on the subway system and taking the city in heels in transit from Brooklyn to Times Square - which was quite the adventure and another story all in itself.
I met bloggers from all over the U.S. We were given goodies from brands that were present at the conference, and we were also shown brand-new holiday products that are not yet out on shelves, including everything from scents to accessories. Beautiful products presented themselves one after the other, and I was inspired in every way to get home to write about each one. I felt like an insider, to say the least.
As soon as I walked into the Conde Nast building, I was accompanied by a girl that was carrying a tray full of eight Starbucks coffees - all I could think of was Andy Sachs from "The Devil Wears Prada" - craftily balancing everything to keep anything from spilling before hitting the desk of the editors.
I wore Australian designer Steph Audino for the first day of the conference and Houston designer David Peck for the second day of the conference. Each outfit was carefully selected and put together - then, second guessing myself, I would carefully select other outfits then go back to the original outfit I had selected first. I loved the outfits I went with, which were both comfortable and just warm enough to wear in the New York City weather.
After the conference was over, we all sat in the lobby waiting for taxis outside of the revolving door of the Conde Nast - and all I could think to myself is how do I stay here? I wanted to take the revolving door right back into the building to claim my desk upstairs.
How do I stay here? I would soon know that I was so incredibly lucky to not only get into the conference but also for the conference making me realize where I belong.
I had finally found it but thought how would I work my way back in? Not as a blogger at the conference but to come to work with Lucky Magazine or Vogue. I had finally found my spot in New York City, but I took the train to John F. Kennedy International Airport and my flight back to home.
