"Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it."

- Proverbs 22:6

With Thanksgiving coming up, I want to think of all the things for which I am thankful.

This week, I am so thankful and happy my son Jonathan "Buck" Wheat came to visit with me. I want him to take me to the beach, but it is just too cold to go down to the ocean today.

So, I will just sit and talk with Buck about all of the fond, fun memories we have had at our ocean.

We remembered the many times when he was a little boy, and he loved to make sand castles. His sandcastles were just magnificent - always the best sandcastles on the Port Aransas beach.

We talked of the fun times of throwing up pieces of bread to the seagulls and then quickly getting out of the way.

We talked of learning how important it was to keep your mouth closed when throwing up the pieces of bread so you would not get a seagull sandwich from them in return - and not get festooned with a seagull sandwich.

Buck shared a story of when the two of us were on the pier at the Port Lavaca causeway and listened to my favorite album, "Jonathan Livingston Seagull," on his portable 8-track tape player. That should tell you how far our ocean memories go back.

His favorite memory was when he was 16 and got to go to Port Aransas with friends, without me, for the first time. (Perhaps some memories are best left unsaid).

I know I trained him to do what is right while at the beach. And that is why we are able to sit here today and talk about our ocean memories these many years later.

Dear Lord, thank you for the memories you have left with me and for always standing beside me as I cross the ocean of my life.
