My First Job: David Zalman

• Name: David Zalman

• Age: 57

• City of residence: El Campo

• Current title: Board chairman and CEO of Prosperity Bank

• First job: I started selling newspapers in first grade. Then, around sixth or seventh grade, I started working at my dad's Gulf service station.

What it taught me: I think a lot of people might have thought we were unfortunate to have had to start working so young, but it was probably the best experience we ever had. We dealt with customers and other people every day. It taught us to know what the customer wants, how to run a business and how to deal with people. I don't think I'd be where I am today if it weren't for those experiences.
