Eli Garza files to run for district judge

Nov. 19, 2013 at 5:19 a.m.

Eli Garza is seeking the Republican Party nomination for judge of the 377th district court.

Garza, who is the Victoria County first assistant criminal district attorney, formally filed Friday.

Garza graduated from the Creighton University School of Law in Omaha, Neb., in 1999.

As the first assistant in Victoria County, he has tried more than 55 cases ranging from capital murder, murder and aggravated sexual assault - none of which have been reversed by an appellate court. Throughout his career, he has tried more than 70 cases, according to an August news release.

He announced his candidacy in August.

Then, he said that if elected, he would lighten the docket as well as ensure photos were not taken of witnesses to be distributed on the Internet or through text messages. He said that is a safety issue.

Prior to working as the first assistant, he was a defense attorney representing people throughout South Texas.

Judge Robert C. Cheshire serves the 377th district but announced in May that he would not seek re-election.

As of Tuesday, no one else has announced they will run for judge of the 377th district court.

Garza, 41, is originally from McAllen. He is married to Jennifer Ortiz, and they have an 11-year-old son.

"I will promote the ideal that our Constitution contains the complete rules of lawmaking and governance," Garza wrote in his August news release.
