Smoke pours out of a trailer home in the Crestwood Mobile Home Park as firefighters work to extinguish the remaining fire Saturday night. No one was home at the time of the fire and no one was injured but the home was considered a total loss. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Victoria firefighters were called to two fires during the chilly weekend.

Although the cause of the fires is yet to be determined, fire department officials advise residents to take a few safety precautions during the cold weather.

The second fire occurred at 11:40 p.m. Saturday in the 1200 block of Buena Vista Avenue. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, which began in a bedroom, within a couple of minutes, Fire Chief Taner Drake said.

One room was damaged by the fire, Roger Hempel, Victoria Fire Department battalion chief said. The cause of the fire was under investigation.

The cause of the first fire, which damaged a mobile home in the 100 block of Crestwood Drive, also remained under investigation, Hempel said.

With cool weather in the forecast for the rest of the week, Hempel offered a few fire prevention guidelines:

• Inspect all gas furnaces before lighting them.

• If you're using a space heater, make sure no flammable liquids, bedding or drapery are nearby.

• Do not have an open flame in the house outside of a fireplace or wood stove.

• Do not overload any circuits with multiple heaters. If you have a space heater that plugs into the wall, don't plug multiple units into one outlet.
