Fire destroys Port Lavaca home (w/video)
PORT LAVACA - Blue lights flashed from the vests and helmets of firefighters inside a charred home in the 100 block of Whatley Road on Thursday evening.
The call about a structure fire came in about 4 p.m., said Capt. David Johnson of the Port Lavaca Fire Department. The fire took about an hour to extinguish.
Johnson said the home was completely engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived. Smoke could be seen from state Highway 35, he said.
Emergency responders were called to the fire to assist those suffering from smoke inhalation, but additional information about injuries was not available. All living inside the home were able to evacuate before firefighters arrived, Johnson said.
Firefighters remained on the scene, clearing walls and spraying under the home for several hours before packing up shortly before 10 p.m.
Craftsmanship of the home made of solid wood played into the time it took to extinguish the fire, Johnson said.
The homeowner declined to comment.
Johnson said damage to the home was extensive, and the structure is considered a total loss.
The cause of fire is under investigation.
